How ironic that Tyson criticizes the text of Revelation when he doesn't even understand it at all, indicating he's done no significant research on this topic (or else he has, and is just choosing to misrepresent Bible scholars who have). He's a scientist, he says. Who doesn't fully research a topic before debating it? That isn't a scientist. It isn't even smart. Were he to have read any Bible commentaries written prior to 1830 he would know that what he was saying was a complete lie - an intentional misrepresentation - but it seems obvious to me that he's never actually read a Bible commentary written before 1830 (when the popular rapture theory was first introduced). THE HISTORICAL FACT is that the book of Revelation was always regarded as figurative, symbolic speech UNTIL Darwin, Bertrand Russell and other godless fools began to make headway in the cultural landscape in the West. It was THEN that some (Zionists/Dispensationalists) began insisting on a wooden literal translation of Revelation. So, Tyson is actually stating THE OPPOSITE of what is historically true. That pretty much discounts him as knowledgeable (or truthful) on this topic. No surprise to me there. Ancient scholars understood the symbolism found in Revelation, because it's often quoting Old Testament prophets. Read this, from Isaiah 13, which is, as it clearly tells us, a prophecy about the destruction of Babylon: Isaiah 13:1 - The burden of Babylon, which Isaiah the son of Amoz did see. It's judgment language. About the destruction of a wicked nation. That happened. Prophecy fulfilled. The sun, stars, moon language is figurative there, and it's figurative also in Revelation. The Bible explains/interprets itself for those who actually study it. How about this? Obviously figurative language. God is a spirit (John 8:24) - "riding on" or "coming with clouds" is figurative language. Even a child can discern this unless first taught otherwise. Isaiah 19:1 The burden of Egypt. Behold, the LORD rideth upon a swift cloud, and shall come into Egypt: and the idols of Egypt shall be moved at his presence, and the heart of Egypt shall melt in the midst of it. That was fulfilled. The destruction of Egypt. God didn't actually "ride" on a swift cloud. C'mon, God gave us brains. Let us use them to reason, using logic. Too bad Tyson won't. But, how ironic that Tyson, who doesn't understand the Bible because he hasn't even attempted to understand it, would be critical of "those stupid God-believers." Most eschatology teaching today is false - turn away from it - and if someone mentions a rapture, run even faster from them. They're not speaking for God. How can we know? As that informs us, when Joseph's father heard the dream, he was able to properly interpret it's symbolic meaning. Neil deGrasse Tyson could learn something here. Throughout the Bible, dreams and visions include tons of symbolism, most of which is made clear in the Old Testament (which many people often ignore). If one attempts to understand Revelation without first having read and understood the O.T. prophets, he'll be totally confused or easily misled by false teachers, of which there are thousands today. The book of Revelation is the prophecy of the destruction of the Herodian '2nd' temple and Jerusalem, and the putting away of the old covenant - the end of Torah - events which took place exactly as Jesus had also prophesied in Luke 21, Mark 13 and Matthew 24 - all fulfilled in the generation of Jesus' original hearers of his prophecies - fulfilled in AD70, which is one of the most-documented of ancient historical events. Even universities like Princeton, first established as a Christian institution, are abandoning requirements for learning ancient languages and history, etc. Why?
